Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician
SUMMARY

Performs laboratory procedures in all areas of the laboratory: blood banking, chemistry, hematology, serology, urine analysis, and other procedures as required. As appropriate, this position receives or obtains various specimen(s), performs quality controls and maintenance procedures. Must perform calibrations on analytes and analyzers as required. May be asked to assist supervising other workers as permitted by CLIA 88, during the absence of the regular supervisor (One year experience required).

This position complies with department and organization-wide policies, Safety, and Infection Control, and all Federal and State of Nebraska regulations related to the performance of Webster County Community Hospital operations and requirements of the compliance program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs qualitative and quantitative chemical tests as described in the Webster County Community Hospital lab test menu.

Records proper standards and controls that are performed with each respective procedure.

Performs chemical analysis of urine specimens as outlined in the WCCH test menu; performs daily quality control on known urine specimens.

Receives culture swabs, urine, stool, sputum samples, etc., and prepares samples for shipment.

Performs test outlined in the WCCH test menu and Quality Control including but not limited to: mono, strep, and pregnancy testing.

Performs ABO blood type, Rh, antibody screen, crossmatches, blood bank quality controls, blood bank maintenance and other blood bank procedures.

Places orders for blood and blood products with American Red Cross Regional Blood Center; inspects all units of blood and or blood products daily for storage temperatures and records observations.

Maintains accurate inventory of blood and blood products; returns all unused blood to American Red Cross within the correct outdating period; maintains complete records of all human blood and blood products received and transferred.

Performs therapeutic Phlebotomy on patients as ordered and properly disposes of the blood unit.

Prepares and standardizes various solutions and chemicals; Documents laboratory data and maintains necessary records, as required; Disposes properly of body substances, contaminated supplies, sharps, and reagents.

Completes accurately and efficiently all daily laboratory work as ordered by the physician and reports results in a timely manner per the priority status of the testing.

Performs daily quality control standards, and maintains accurate record of all standards, controls, and laboratory tests.

Performs any general cleaning and maintenance needed in the physical laboratory, equipment and related subjects.

Checks daily all thermometers, I-STAT simulators, condition of all instruments, and performs routine daily maintenance as outlined in the WCCH policies and procedure manual.

Maintains a complete list of any reagents or supplies that need to be ordered.

Attends in-service education programs, workshops, and any other training required to keep updated on technology as directed by the supervisor.

Schedules and performs any laboratory examinations through the week to relieve the workload on Saturday and Sunday.

Reviews quality controls and procedures; revises any test that standard deviation so indicates.

Performs required proficiency survey testing on unknown specimens, as assigned.

Reads minutes of monthly Lab meeting and Department Head Meeting, understands their contents, and discusses any questions or comments with laboratory representative to committee and supervisor.

Handles an even amount of on-call hours effectively and efficiently.

Responds to callbacks within 30 minutes.

Participates in monthly QA program.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High School education required.

MT: Must be a graduate of an accredited college and school of medical technology with formal training in same.

MLS: Must be a graduate of an accredited college or program with a degree in Medical Laboratory Science with formal training in Medical Laboratory Science.

MLT: Must be a graduate of an accredited college or program with a degree in Medical Laboratory technology with formal training in Medical Laboratory technology

Experience in rural health clinic is beneficial but not required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION

Must meet the guidelines set for the State of Nebraska for laboratory licensure.

MT: Medical Technologist Registration or equivalent required. Must be certified by one of the major accrediting organizations such as ASCP or equivalent.

MLS: Must be certified by one of the major accrediting organizations such as ASCP or equivalent. Certification must be obtained for DOT urine collection and Saliva Testing Scientist for breath alcohol.

MLT: Prefer certification by one of the major accrediting organizations such as ASCP or equivalent as a Medical Laboratory Technician. Certification must be obtained for DOT urine collection.
